Blogger Bake Sale–May 14th, 2011

One of my goals for this year (and for always) is to focus my attention on doing good for other people.   I feel very lucky to have had the opportunities I have and I want to make sure others  benefit.

So, when Gaby of What’s Gaby Cooking sent a call out for a Nationwide Blogger Bake Sale–I jumped at the chance to organize a bake sale  for the Southwest Florida region (Sarasota specifically). I like organizing.  I like baking.  And, I like the mission of Share Our Strength–to end childhood hunger in the United States by 2015.    Last year, the Blogger Bake Sale was held nationwide and raised over $16,000.

I know, in our house, with all of our food choices, buckets of uneaten candy,  seemingly constant eating/cooking and trips to the grocery store— it seems hard to believe that there are kids who don’t get one full meal a day–let alone three.  But, childhood hunger in the United States is real.

My children’s school organizes a backpack program which coordinates the distribution of food filled backpacks for kids to take home over the weekends.  Without those backpacks, some kids (and their families) may not have a real meal until school resumes.  The problem is worse when school is out for the summer or long holidays.

And kids that are hungry do worse in school, get sick more often and don’t grow at a normal rate.  This is a problem that we can help solve—one treat at a time!

So, I am taking on this challenge of organizing this bake sale to be held on May 14, 2011 (yikes!).  I’m not sure where it is going to be, who is going to bake (are you interested? let me know!) or any of the details…..but, I am excited about it.  I’ll keep you posted on the details as I get them worked out.  And, pass the word along… don’t have to be a blogger to help-we need everyone.
